History and Training
Caitlin Cunningham grew up in Parkton, Maryland, just north of Baltimore, Maryland. She was always attracted to the theatre. As a child she watched countless movie musicals, before she attended Les Miserables on Broadway for her sixth birthday. Though she was initially scared of the hookers, she got over that fear and has been hooked ever since.
She attended the all-girls' school, OLDFIELDS SCHOOL, in Glencoe, Maryland. It was there that she attempted to act in many various productions, but found her true calling with directing. There she directed her first piece, Beth Henley's Crimes of the Heart, and the next year directed a new full-length play, Limited Engagement.
Then she moved up to Bronxville, New York, where she attended SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE. While there, she directed various readings of new plays for the Sarah Lawrence theatre department, assistant directed the musicals, Two Gentleman of Verona (Dir. Will Frears) and Cabaret (Dir. Allen Lang). She also stage managed and assistant stage managed Doll's House, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?, and others.

Creativity in Production and Direction
For one season, she was the Director of Development, Internal Communication, as well as Company Manager for THE DOWNSTAGE THEATRE COMPANY. She produced various comedy nights, a 25-hour play festival, and the new full-length play These Are Not Your Fears by Lukas Fauset. She also directed Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods.
She spent a summer as a Management and Company Management Intern at Baltimore's CENTERSTAGE, where she and some fellow interns revisited winning plays from prior years of Centerstage's Young Playwright's Festival. She directed a short, student-written play entitled, Tunnels.

Caitlin spent some time studying at ACCADEMIA DELL'ARTE in Arezzo, Italy. There she studied Physical Theatre with Claudia Schnürer, Commedia dell'Arte with Michele Bottini, and Red Nose Clowning with Eli Simon. There's nothing like doing sun salutations to the rising of the Tuscan Sun!
While abroad she started discussions with her friend, Alanna Shaffer, exploring potential outlets for their mutual passion for musical theatre. When she returned to the States, Cunningham and Shaffer went to Coney Island one day to further discuss their desire to do more musical theatre, thus SANDCASTLE PRODUCTIONS was born. With Sandcastle Productions, Caitlin directed various cabarets, as well as full productions of I Love You Because and Pippin. Caitlin currently lives and works in New York City. |
